Microsoft Expression Web Publishing Setup

It’s been 7 years since Microsoft dropped support for FrontPage with no security updates, resulting in a vulnerable hosting platform. By December 31, 2015 all FrontPage access will be denied and your site will be converted for security upgrades. Please note that FrontPage will no longer be available. If you are currently using the FrontPage (FTP) editor on your site, you will be able to easily switch to Expression Web which you can download for free here.

This page describes how to set up the new remote location for your website and configure the new publishing setting for your website in Expression Web.

1. Create a new folder in your C: Drive with an easy to remember name.

We're using 00-Web so that it remains at the top of your folder list.
(Get help creating a new folder)

2. Open your Expression Web and click on "Site" in the menu Bar.

Choose "Open Site" from the dropdown list.

3. From here out you can click on "Browse" and locate the folder you created for your new web.

 4. Once your site folder has appeared here, click "open".

5. Your new folder will now be in the "Local" location and will be empty.

To connect to your "Remote"/Live site click on "Publishing" at the bottom of the screen.

6. Once you have opened your publishing window, click on "Add a publishing destination."

7. Your connection setting will be blank and you will fill this in with the shown fields, using "FTP" for the connection and "public_html" for the Directory.

The username and password provided to you by Midwest Captions is what you use for the "Credentials" area.

Please replace the "Name" and "Location" to the name of your website and your website url.

Fill in all fields and click "Add".

8. The screen will split, and you will now see your "Local" folder on the left and it will still be empty.

On the right will be your "Remote"/Live site folders and files.

9. Select all of the "Remote" folders and use the middle arrow to download the files to your "Local" folder.

10. You're Done! Happy Editing!

Read on for help on editing a page.

11. Find the page that you want to edit in your "Local" side. Your page may also be in a folder.

Place your curser over the page and double click to open a new tab for editing.

12. Your page is now open in the editor and you may make necessary changes.

Don't forget to hit the save icon!

13. Click "Site View" to bring you back to your "Local" folder list.

14. On your "Local" side, highlight the page that you just edited and saved, and use the middle arrow to publish it to your "Remote"/ live site.

If you get a pop-up asking you if you want to "overwrite remote files", click it if you are confident that your edits are correct.

If you're not sure if you're ready to overwrite the remote site, use this time to go back and double check edits.

All final "Local" edits will overwrite the "Remote" side, leaving your live site current and up to date.
